Relationship between God and Man
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
\
Before understanding the relationship between God and man, there has to be a complete understanding of who is God? What are his attributes? Once these are answered, then we can come to the relationship between God and man.

Our Lord owns us. He provides us with all our needs, feeds us when we are hungry, quenches thirst, holds our hand in despair, isn’t it? He listens to our silent prayers, when we are in dire need of his help and even when we are just doing wishful thinking. We can call him directly, like on a hotline, no mediation from a third party is required. Communication between Him and me is direct and needs no routing. His network does not need switching, has infinite bandwidth. Like a fibre optic has been laid to each and every being, one just needs to transmit a bit and there shall be a response.

Man is bound to worship his Creator, abide by his rules and not foray into prohibited waters. A slave ought to fear his Lord, lest knowingly or unknowingly, his actions may make his Lord angry with him. An obedient slave ought to be thankful and grateful to his Lord for all that he has been showered with, namely human existence, food, love and respect, comforts of worldly life and everything else. A Good slave ought to love his lord and always try to please his lord.

The basis of any relationship between the two entities starts with knowing their respective position with respect to each other. The relationship between God and man is akin to the Supreme King and His subject. He has created us, we are His finest creation. He is the Artist, we are his masterpiece. And He created us for the sole objective of praising him alone, as God said in the Quran. I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me (51:56)

At an individual level, relation between God and man is of a spiritual level. One in which man constantly gains nourishment and energy from the mere remembrance of his Generous and Merciful Lord. Man’s life is guided every moment and every single day by what pleases his Lord and what makes Him angry, so that he constantly walks down the guided path so as to please his Creator and not otherwise. The ultimate cherry on the cake is God’s consent and his pleasure and blessings in the form of never-ending bliss called heaven, where the Lord is happy with his subject.

I have Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: “I will create a vicegerent on earth. They said: “Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we do celebrate Thy praise and glorify Thy holy (name)?” He said, “I know what ye know not” (Quran 2:30).

Man is God’s vicegerent on earth; this is by far the best words to describe man’s relation with his Lord as described in the verses above. This holds good both as a human race as well as an individual. As a collective, human beings are bound to live by and abide by the rules of the Creator on the society as a whole. And as an individual also, one must adhere to the guidelines the Creator has bestowed upon i.e. his own body and soul.
