Why does God send Prophets anyway? Because He wanted to tell us how to live righteously and not get confused. He wanted to show us the true path and also inspire us to follow the true path by observing these pious souls, these role models.
Prophets are nothing but the link between the Creator and the creation. God communicated with the mankind through His Prophets; hence they are also aptly called Messengers of God. The role of Prophets is of fundamental importance in understanding the will of God. The Prophets were pious and holy people selected from the contemporaries and given the message through angels, which they further communicated to the people of the times.
God has sent Prophets right from the beginning, in fact, Adam was the first Prophet of God. He was followed by many Prophets, like Noah, Moses, Abraham, David, Jesus and at last Mohammed, to name significant among them.
God has sent prophets for all ages and all nations. Whenever there was chaos in this world and the good was diminishing from the society, God sent down his messenger to restore good and arrest the evil. God chose the best to convey His message. He chooses whom He pleases for this reputed job. “Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.” (Quran 23:44)
Sometimes, the Prophets were also given revelations in the form of a book or written word. The famous among them are the Torah given to Moses (remember the Ten Commandments), the Psalms given to David, and the Gospel given to Jesus, and the last one Quran given to Mohammed (Peace be upon them).
It is pertinent to mention here that Muslims believe in and respect all the messengers of God with no exceptions. All the prophets came from the same One God and they had the same mission: to lead human race to the Creator. Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us and that which was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael, and Isaac and Jacob, and their children, and that which Moses and Jesus received and that the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them and unto Him we have surrendered. (2:136)
In a general sense, there are three features with which to recognise a Prophet, firstly he is the best among his contemporaries morally and intellectually. Secondly, He is supported by extraordinary miracles from God. For ex, Jesus’ contemporaries were recognized as skilled physicians; therefore, his miracles were to raise the dead and cure incurable diseases which are also mentioned in the Bible. Thirdly, every prophet explicitly mentions that whatever he receives is from God Almighty for the well-being of mankind. He neither does any addition/ alteration nor suppresses any iota of message of God.
